Mission
The Ursuline Tradition
NativityMiguel model schools are faith-based, sponsored by religious orders and local church communities. Like NativityMiguel Network schools, the work of the Ursuline sisters has provided a new beginning for young women and girls growing up in urban and economically underserved neighborhoods.
Serviam Girls Academy will draw on the Ursuline tradition of education to enhance the educational experience of each student.
The Ursuline heritage is inspired by the vision of St. Angela Merici and the traditions of the Order that she established. This heritage has emphasized the education of women and girls for close to 475 years and has spread to six continents. St. Angela lived a life of prayer and love of neighbor, dedicating herself to both, especially to the education of girls. Following her lead, Ursuline sisters throughout the world continue to empower others through education and service.
From this rich history, the essential characteristics of an Ursuline education have emerged:
- Respect for each person gifted by God.
- Emphasis on the development of women and girls, and their unique contributions to society
- Recognition of the importance of the family, and the dignity and worth of each of its members
- Development of a global perspective to reach beyond one's immediate culture and environment
- Prime value given to Serviam (I will serve), and leadership in the process of education
- A life grounded in deep Faith
This mission is further enhanced by promoting a community of learning in all-girls school environment, in which girls assume positions of leadership, whether in arts, sports, or academic teams, and are more likely to continue in leadership roles later in life. The philosophies of the NativityMiguel educational model and of the Ursuline sisters provide an ideal foundation on which to build Serviam Girls Academy.
